Our Calling

“That they may be called oaks of righteousness…”

— Isaiah 61:3 (ESV)

Oaks Not Orchids was born from a growing burden for the spiritual formation of the next generation.

As cultural voices grow louder and parenting advice becomes increasingly fear-driven, many Christian mothers are left wondering what it truly looks like to raise children who know God, love His Word, and remain faithful when life is hard. Oaks Not Orchids exists to offer clarity, conviction, and biblical grounding in the midst of that tension.

This ministry is built on the belief that discipleship is not meant to be outsourced. Scripture places the primary responsibility for spiritual formation within the home, and mothers play a vital role in faithfully planting and nurturing seeds of truth.

The Heart of This Space

This is not a space for quick fixes or perfect, performative parenting.

Oaks Not Orchids is built on the conviction that Scripture is sufficient, parents are primary disciplers, and strength is shaped in the struggle.

Here you will find clarity, simple rhythms of discipleship, and curated resources and recommendations for mothers raising rooted, resilient children.

If you are longing for deeper roots, you are welcome here.

Meet Tamara

Tamara Carroll is a wife, mother of four, Marine Corps veteran, and a devoted disciple of Christ with a heart for discipling women and families.

With a background in school psychology and experience in the classical Christian education world, Tamara has spent years working at the intersection of child development, education, and faith. Through both her professional work and her life as a mother, she began to see a widening gap between what culture teaches parents to prioritize and what Scripture calls families to pursue.

For years, I carried the quiet weight of watching mothers strive to protect their children from every hardship while feeling uncertain about how to prepare them for faithfulness when life grew difficult. I wrestled with the tension between expert-driven parenting advice and the clear call of Scripture. Over time, God made it unmistakably clear that my calling was to write, teach, and equip mothers to return to biblical discipleship. Not rooted in fear, but grounded in truth. Not aimed at comfort, but at enduring faith.

Why Oaks Not Orchids?

The image of an oak captures the heart of this ministry.

Oaks grow slowly. Their roots run deep. They are shaped by seasons, pressure, and time. Orchids, though beautiful, require controlled environments to survive.

Oaks Not Orchids reflects a conviction that Christian children are not meant to be raised for ideal conditions, but formed through truth, endurance, and trust in God’s design.

This ministry calls mothers to look beyond short-term comfort and toward long-term faithfulness, trusting that God uses perseverance, pressure, and His Word to cultivate resilient faith.

Morning + Bedtime Scripture Affirmations

The Morning + Bedtime Scripture Affirmations were created to help mothers speak God’s Word over their children at the beginning and end of each day. These affirmations are rooted directly in Scripture and designed to reinforce truth, identity, and courage through consistent repetition.

It is a simple, faithful way to begin discipling your children through the power of God’s Word.

What Others are Saying

It is very obvious to me that Tamara’s uniquely clear vision for parenthood and family discipleship is from the LORD, and was gifted to His faithful servant whom He knew would steward and communicate it well.

I consider the Oaks Not Orchids message to be one of the most pivotal pieces of discipleship wisdom I’ve received in my time as a Christian, and have many times (usually after tear-filled and deeply comforting conversations with Tamara) found myself thanking the LORD for His grace and mercy in providing me with a friend who is such a wise and discerning counselor to help me navigate a confusing world as a first-generation Christian woman, wife, and mother.

I am absolutely thrilled that, after much encouragement from me, Tamara is going to be blessing a wider-scale audience with the truths that have, I believe, changed the course of my family and children’s lives on earth and in eternity.
